Is motivation a drug?

I’ve heard many people talk about motivation as if they were hooked on it!  In fact, I believe some people are!  Now the real opportunity here is for us to explore what it means for motivation to be part of our lives.  If you view it as a drug, then what will happen is you will find that you crave for it.  You needed in order to survive.  You are dependent on it.  I don’t think that motivation needs to be this way.

The question is, what metaphor do you want motivation to take on?

I have learned from John Di Lemme about defining concepts in life; it is the definitions that you have in your life that determine your reality.  If you haven’t sat down to distinguish things in your life – for instance, what’s the difference between conviction and commitments, the difference between motivation and inspiration, the difference between success and winning – these minor differences when defined can help you lead a more ‘distinguished’ life.

I prefer to look at the definition of motivation as not a drug.  I think of motivation as a muscle.  Because, true motivation sustains itself.  Hasn’t there been a time where you’ve not exercised for a long time and then decided one day to go out for a run?  Wasn’t it exhausting, painful, and unpleasant?  Think about it – if you had simply continued to run on a regular basis, the next time someone springs a surprise on you and asks you are out for a jog, you wouldn’t have any trepidation.  After you’ve built your motivation muscle, notice how are now you can become the motivation fitness coach for anyone else who needs to build this exact same muscle!

Remember: treat your metaphors of life with respect!  What you define in your life is exactly what you will get!
