The death of identity
who are you?
This is one of the most profound questions to ever have been asked. But the question is, do we have an answer?
When you ask yourself what you are, do you have a clear idea? or is it a little hazy? For most people, this question is not just profound, it’s confusing. Because we are just going to spew out many different concepts of who we are rather than who we really are. Let’s look at a very clear description of what someone is. When people describe you, they use adjectives. They’ll say something like “he is a nice guy” or “she’s a wonderful person”.
These adjectives are hardly effective in providing a clear description of who you are. Compare it with “he’s a phenomenal speaker” or “she’s an endearing and warm person”. this gives you a little bit more body to the description.
You know what the frightening thing is? It’s the fact that we describe ourselves more negatively much of the time than positively. For instance, if you were to describe yourself right now, how would you describe yourself? I’ll bet that your vocabulary is actually fairly limited because you never even thought about it. Is it that dangerous?
I think we need to constantly refine our identity through the descriptions we have. If not we won’t have very much of an identity left. Most people live their lives with very little to look forward to. I’d say for those of us were seeking purpose and direction in life, we have to constantly remind ourselves that focusing our side is not as important as focusing inside. If I am someone who enjoys running a business and helping people to succeed, then I wouldn’t just describe myself as a business runner and the people helper. Because this is bland.
However if I’d describe myself as a power-driving, inadequacy-demolishing and abundance-thinking business coach, The description is very much richer isn’t it? So with that, it’s important for us to build up our own identity vocabulary. One of the most important aspects of identity is that people need to recognize it as well. So don’t just keep its yourself, tell people who you are. Make sure that you rehearse and you ingest every single ounce of your identity ingredients as you can.
I’ll be adding a list of these ingredients as time goes by, so do drop in from time to time.
