Shifting States: Your Most Powerful Asset
Ever figured out why some people are transfixed on one belief than others? It’s because the most powerful asset that they have was never used. Your emotional states are volatile. You change every moment without realizing. After all, it’s impossible to remain in the same state all the time. But the trouble is, there are many people who would prefer NOT to accept responsibility for their own emotions and find a solution for it, and rather get themselves into an emotional rut.
State shifting is also the primary intervention pattern that many psychotherapists use. It may come in the form of logic or medication. Whatever happens, the shift in state occurs. More importantly, you can’t just use one method. Which is one of the reasons why believe that pure medication and any other physical form of therapy should only be taken as the last resort.
The support mechanism does not allow you to develop the habit that is conducive for your own sustained change. Then begs the question - does it mean that there are people who cannot manage their states? Hmm… I think that’s a question for everyone out there. Many people are not able to because they don’t practice what is already out there in the literature. Pick up any book, and you will see age old wisdom from the gurus that have worked for so many people. Yet, many don’t see the point.
My clients typically consider my approach either fully empathetic or extremely harsh. Yet, I can’t treat every client the same way. Usually, though, I get results that the client needs. Can we all say that an intervention is always going to work? Well… no. Sometimes it needs time. Just as every major approach ranging from psychiatric medication to psychoanalysis to cognitive behavioral therapy has worked for some and not for others, so we need to consider the possibility of having something tailored to your needs.
Flexibility - that’s the key.
