To those of you who are voting, it’s an important decision to make tomorrow - who governs you. But I’m not so interested in the political implications. I’m interested in the way you make choices.

I’ve made some pretty terrible choices in my life and also had my fair share of good ones. What we choose to govern not just a country, but govern ourselves, is important. Without self-governance, everything else is pretty much meaningless.

If you really want to start getting ahead in your ability to take charge further, then make tomorrow your polling day - for yourself. Sometimes, when life charges at you unexpectedly, you need to make a change. In fact, this doesn’t always happen. Often life creeps up on you and the changes you make are subtle, but you are different nonetheless.

I recently met an old friend from a long time ago. I was sitting in the cab wondering how long it has been… and I realized that I’d known her for 15 years! But my, have things changed. I think she’s happier for what she is doing, and I also think that things have changed for the better for me too, since our Junior College days. Ultimately, we will all survive, and we will all get about in life. But I’m talking about having the best possible choice.

IF we are not aware of our choices, how can we make the best choice possible? But then again, if all of us have awareness of all our best possible choices, that would make us infallible, would it not? So, in this apparent paradox, perhaps there is something else we need to find. A balance, a kind of reflection and resolution about whether we have governed ourselves well enough.

I suppose when I was younger, the choices I made were less life-changing than the ones I make now. I suppose you might experience the same thing. But we still need our vote of confidence to say “yes, I think this is a pretty good choice to make” and go with it. After all, only time will tell if your choice is good, and often, hindsight is 20/20.

Although my constituency was walked-over, and I’m not required to vote for any election candidate, I’m going to do a different kind of voting. It’s the kind that asks about the uncertain future, and whether I am aware of where I’m headed. Were my choices good enough back then? Did I learn something? And most importantly, are these choices going to help me to make my life here more fulfilling? I hope you’ll take these questions with you and make tomorrow your very own personal ‘polling day’.
