Helping Others Has Never Been Easy But...

Most people remember me as someone who is in the ‘helping’ profession. Being a counselor or coach is really not difficult, but it can be emotionally tiring as well. Dealing with the emotional burdens sometimes is tough, but the feeling of having helped someone often feels like running a marathon. It’s painful through the process, but the exhilaration at the finish line is indescribable.

The most important thing is… if you feel like you are drowning or sinking and there’s really no where else to turn, it’s the metaphor you have for living that will determine your course of action. Perhaps this is a way to help yourself.

Most of the time, we are not in charge of our mental metaphors. To gain insight into these mental metaphors, we need a little bit of time to disassociate from the current metaphors we play in our heads and step out of them to examine what is happening in our mental maps.

It’s not what happens when you are down, but rather what you do when things are bleak and you have little color in your life. Crafting effective mental metaphors can actually help you with the way you lead your life. It’s a symbolic process of defining who you are and what you can do not just for yourself, but for the rest of the world.

Those of you who know about symbol work know how to shift your mental metaphors up to a point. However, there are other things that you can do to master the metaphors in your life. J

In the upcoming Patterns of Excellence program, I’ll be featuring a lot more metaphor in change. If you haven’t signed up for POE, go to www.akltg.com to register for an upcoming preview!
