Using NLP for community improvement

Those of you who are a little more interested in the development of this country – probably would want to look at the applications of NLP in the area of National Development. I mean, seriously, most guys who keep complaining about National Service and the like should really find a new way to turning NLP to their advantage – provide feedback. There’s probably more than what’s listed here, but I think NLP should also be used to create positive change in the community we call home.

There are a number of areas that need attention in Singapore today.

  1. Parenting.

In case you didn’t realize, most parents think differently here than in other countries. A lack of proper parent education means that expectations and family divides will continue unless we have something to say about it. Parents need to learn to be teachers. They need to understand the psychology of child development so that they won’t go around forcing their children to read before they are ready. So that they give up so easily when their children are facing tough times.

  1. Leadership in Government.

As we said, a huge number of NLP applications can be used in the Government. Political savvy has always been modeled, but at the same time, the considerations of the thinking process should be upgraded. Imagine your grassroots leader versed in NLP and being able to mould him or herself to be able to fit his residents’ perceptions of a good leader, then use NLP to model charisma and great thinking skills.

  1. Cultural Modeling.

I think that our NLP communication model allows for great applications for those who are interacting with people from other countries and cultures. It’s great to be able to understand the thinking behind different cultures – so if you are headed up to do business in India, China or anywhere else in the world, modeling their culture will help you.

  1. Eliminating Apathy through Education.

I find that most people in Singapore don’t always think of loyalty as their first reason for staying in Singapore. Wait till a tsunami or hurricane blows Singapore over, and you’ll probably find that the reason for our existence in the country was not really drawn out. This one has to start from the Education system. Truthfully, most of the education system in Singapore is perfect – except that we tend to lag behind in implementing policies that protect, develop and enhance the capabilities of our teachers. Teachers need to learn to be psychologists and counselors.

  1. Increasing Willingness to Contribute to Our Society.

I think some people are not willing to contribute to society because of fear of repercussion. But I also think some people are not willing to do it because of incompetence. This includes the lack of the ability to think from different perspectives. As we know, NLP provides a great advantage because a person can adopt different perspectives all at the same time.
